Raffia and Lilac Ribbon Sun Hat Lilac and Satin Handbag

With the wedding season swiftly approaching now is the time to start searching for those all important accessories. A good place to start would be www.andreeaflorisca.co.uk.

Andreea Florisca is an Edinburgh-based designer who offers a unique range of handbags, clothes and accessories. Many of her products are knitted or crocheted with the addition of elegant fabric embellishments. The combination of colours, patterns and textures create a style that is luxurious and yet practical.

I was immediately drawn to the Raffia and Lilac Ribbon Sun Hat (above) which would be ideal for a spring wedding or look equally as pretty at a picnic or day at the beach. The blending of lilac chenille and floral satin in the Lilac and Satin Handbag (also above) is simply stunning.

Full details can be found at www.andreeaflorisca.co.uk where you can buy online or request bespoke orders.

Hello Mango

Tuesday, April 4th, 2006
Lammikin Yarn Baby Flittens

I think I mentioned that I’ve recently taken up knitting. With this new past time comes a new found fascination with patterns, knitting needles, knitting bags, knitting needle cases, and particularly with yarn. (I’ve recently learned to refer to it as yarn and not wool!) It was therefore with some glee that I discovered Hello Mango. Not only do they sell merino wool but they spin it themselves on a Louet (spinning wheel).

Zoe from Hello Mango has a degree in Theatre Design and has a passion for ‘all things dramatic and the colourful’. This is reflected in her vibrant choice of colourways. She also sells a range of hand crocheted items including hats, flittens (see above), bags and brooches.

Hello Mango can be found at craft fairs across the north of England. And for a quick fix you can visit www.hellomango.co.uk.

Dasmarca

Gloria Scarf by Dasmarca

I have recently taken up knitting and was fascinated to discover knitwear label Dasmarca. Dasmarca was set up in 2003 by knitwear designer Bidyut Das. Bidyut grew up in the remote hilly province of Tripura (northern India), where he was surrounded by a community of weavers and knitters. After studying at Central Saint Martin’s College and the Royal College of Art he began developing his signature ‘chunky sculptural knitting’.

Bidyut has spent the last few years experimenting with different styles and techniques, including the use of knitting needles the size of broomsticks and wool as thick as rope!

All Dasmarca designs are knitted and finished by hand and are created from unspun Merino wool. To view the Dasmarca collections, visit www.dasmarca.co.uk.

Spring Shrugs

Tuesday, March 14th, 2006
Fawn Shrug

It’s so difficult to buy clothes right now. Officially it’s spring and therefore I’m inclined to cast out all those winter layers but it’s still so cold. And snow in March! Luckily I came across this gorgeous shrug by We Are Scarves. It’ll keep you warm and it’s glamorous enough to wear in the evenings. It’ll take you right through spring and into those long summer evenings.

Have a look at the We Are Scarves website at www.wearescarves.co.uk. They also make hats, bags, handmade cards, knitting accessories and jewellery.

It’s Cold Outside

Juniper Hat by Funky Dooraye Damson Tart Hat by Funky Dooraye

With Spring allegedly just around the corner but with winter still clinging on (it snowed here last week!), you’ll need something to take the chill off.

Funky Dooraye have just the thing. Their stylish new collection of hats have been lovingly handmade in pure Noro wool and finished with pretty vintage buttons and embellishments. There are a number of designs to choose from in contemporary and vintage styles. And, because of the way Noro wool is dyed creating different colour combinations, each hat is unique.

Funky Dooraye hats can be purchased online from www.aurorabloom.com.

Little Hooligan

Saturday, December 17th, 2005
Beret by Little Hooligan

I have recently become an auntie for the first time and I was therefore delighted to come across Little Hooligan.

Clare Hourigan of Little Hooligan has designed a gorgeous range of knitwear for the style conscious baby. All garments are hand knitted in the UK and hand finished using vintage buttons and trimmings. They are made from the softest merino wool and arrive wrapped in luxury tissue paper in their own ribboned boxes.

I ordered the jaunty beret in white chocolate (above) and a pair of the white chocolate mittens. They are every bit as cute as their pictures. I’ve also got my eye on the 1950s matinee jacket, ’for the very fashion-forward baby who loves retro’.

As well as the cosy knitwear, Little Hooligan also sells a range of ’lovely other stuff’. They have sourced a range of very special products from other companies who share their ethos. See the Bill Amberg sheepskin lined bootees (below) ‘for feet that need to be the last word in luxury’ .
