This Saturday (14th May 2011) sees the launch of Clare Knox-Bentham’s new installation at Manchester Craft and Design Centre. Entitled ‘The Walking Dead: Drawings in Plastic’, Clare’s work is inspired by the Mexican tradition of celebrating the lives of the deceased. Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a fascinating Mexican national holiday where people come together to celebrate the lives of friends and family who have died. You can find more information about this tradition on Wikipedia.

The intricate drawings contain characters and motifs to represent elements of each person’s life, and although some of the themes may be quite dark, they are balanced with a vibrant use of colour. The pieces themselves are also thematically linked so you can walk amongst them to experience the stories and tales within. The pictures included here are of the work being installed ready for the launch.

The launch is free to attend and will feature live classical guitar music from James Kelly, punch and non-stop drawing. Don’t worry if you can’t make it on Saturday as the artworks will be on display until August of this year.
