Peace, Love and Storage

Who’s messier in the home, men or women?
In our house I’d say that we’re pretty evenly matched. We’re both untidy. But whereas I will readily admit to this, my husband still believes that I’m the only messy person in the house. So convinced is he of his own tidiness that I believed it myself until I moved in with him. It took me a few days to work out that actually it was his mother who kept his room tidy (or that skillfully evasive tidying fairy). After over ten years of living together he still registers surprise when he has to navigate his way across piles of papers and shopping bags in the hallway, most of which he’s left lying around. There are no tidying fairies in our home. They hung up their pinnies the day we moved in.
It seems that we’re not the only couple engaging in this debate. IKEA has built a whole marketing campaign around it. Peace, Love and Storage kicks off today with a TV advert shot in front of a live audience, featuring four stand-up comics, two men and two women, debating who the messier sex is.
At the end of the ad viewers are directed to a new IKEA Facebook page where they can vote on who they believe the messier sex is. They can even submit photo and video evidence.
The premise behind the campaign is that clutter causes arguments and these can be avoided by having the right storage solutions. It’s a clever idea but if our overflowing laundry basket is anything to go by, my husband and I are quite possibly beyond saving.
