A Day in the Life of Lisa Philp

Pieces of Me Pendants and Lisa Philp

Today’s post is a Day in the Life of feature written by Lisa Philp of Pieces of Me Pendants.

Love on the Train

Our alarm startles me around 5 am; yes way too early, but my husband commutes by train to work. In fact we met and fell in love commuting together aboard the train during my previous life when I was working for a non profit organisation, before deciding to turn my love of arts and crafts into a business. I, however, lie in bed while he gets ready, to review my day ahead (plus it’s nice and warm in there). After he heads out I stumble to the kitchen and prepare my coffee.

The Less Glamorous Side

My morning is spent doing computer stuff - printing off orders, re-listing items, replying to emails, ordering supplies, etc. One of the perhaps less glamorous aspects of running your own craft business and something that you don’t envision – or I didn’t. Still I enjoy this because it gives me an opportunity to interact with my customers.

The Pendants

After my morning on the computer I go to where my completed pendants are finished drying and prepare to finalize the orders. I make any necklaces (ribbons, cords and chain) that go along with the orders and then package everything up into cute little organza bags with gift cards and package it all up for shipping. This usually takes a few hours.

Off to the Post Office

Once all the orders are ready, I’m off to the Post Office to ship them out. The counter people are very friendly and I enjoy talking with them. Due to my very frequent visits we’ve got to know each other on a personal level. Afterward, I usually grab a quick bite to eat before returning home, usually a sandwich or slice of pizza. Once I’m back home I log back into my computer and repeat my morning tasks.

Finally I sit down in my workspace and begin the pendant making process. I’m usually working there, covered in glue and glaze until my husband returns from work again around 7pm. We usually eat dinner and then head out quickly to pick up any supplies I need before the stores close. We often head over to the local book store, grab a specialty coffee like a yummy chai tea latte or vanilla latte, and then thumb through some magazines and books.

At the End of the Day

When we arrive home again around 9 I check my messages and orders again and finish up any work that I didn’t get around to doing that day. On slow days, which are thankfully not too often, when all my orders are done I like to paint, mostly in oils but have recently discovered how much I enjoy watercolours as well. We retire around 11, which makes for another full day and I fall asleep ready to start it all over again.
